Reviews

Library Journal...
CHICAGO, April 1, 2008 - Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc. is pleased to report the following April 1, 2008 Library Journal review of the NEW Britannica Illustrated Science Library (released March 2008):
This beautifully color illustrated 16-volume science encyclopedia will stimulate the interest of any middle school or high school student. Written by the reputable Encyclopaedia Britannica staff, the volumes cover a wide range of topics correlating nicely with science curriculums in the fields of the earth sciences, the life sciences, and the physical sciences. Each topic is addressed in no more than two pages with well-organized information and simple language. The editors have carefully linked their scientific explanations to topics of interest and the student's experience. For example, the roller coaster is included as an example of energy and movement, with a discussion about gravity, friction, and centripetal force. But the reader also discovers how the cars stay on the track and how fast they move, along with the history of roller coasters and the general physics of theme park rides. Many articles also include current interest stories, such as some great explanations of biofuels and fuel cells in the volume on "Energy and Movement." Unlike other scientific encyclopedias, such as DK Science Encyclopedia (1998), where small pictures simply illustrate concepts, these volumes contain more than 10,000 engaging pictures and illustrations that fill an entire page and help the reader grasp complex scientific topics. Each also contains a glossary and a detailed index, but the editors do not provide any outside reference sources that might lead students to discover more detail about a topic. BOTTOM LINE This set would make a superb addition to any school or public library. Since it also invites browsing for pleasure, even a single volume would make a great gift for a Grade 5–9 child at home. Hazel Cameron, PACCAR Corporate Lib., Bellevue, WA

Learning® Magazine 15th AnnualTeachers' ChoiceSM Award for the Classroom 2009...
What aspects of this product did you like the most? Oh by far the best thing is the PICTURES!!!!!! My students were drawn into these books just by the pictures alone. It made them want to read the words just to find out more about the beautiful photos and drawings. VERY GOOD!!!! I liked that the science library was full of pictures and captions rather than just paragraph after paragraph. There were also lots of beautiful pictures throughout the while library set. I love these beautiful books! They are full of photographs and the information is arranged in captions and broken into smaller pieces so the students are not overwhelmed by them. The are on a very wide range of topics that relate to everything we do in 5th grade science. The high quality photographs and illustrations. I still like having a library in my classroom for students to use as resources. This product fit that bill. The aspects of this product that I liked the most were the illustrations that accompanied the informational text. They seemed to bring the books to life. How would this product need to improve to better support your curriculum? About the only thing that I can think of to improve it would be to have more pages and more topics! I'd love to see some volumes on cells, light, sound, matter, etc. These are wonderful! This product is wonderful like it is. It has books on oceans, the earth, volcanos, plants weather, climate, etc. All of these are SOL topics covered in 5th grade. There are many more interesting title as well. These books are so fantastic, the only thing I would change is to make them longer with even more information! Expand in other concept areas for a more comprehensive science library. I would really like to see a volume devoted to only the brain and education. I thought the publisher was very through in included information that could be used by students. If I had to offer one suggestion to improve this product, it would be to provide a list of activities to do along with the reading. If funds were available, would you recommend this product to a teacher at the appropriate grade /age level? Please explain why or why not. I would DEFINITELY recommend this product! It doesn't matter if you aren't a Science teacher. The students will be drawn to these books and not want to put them down. We all know that most students struggle with reading nonfiction but with attractive books like these, they forget that they are reading nonfiction and they just dive in and ENJOY! GREAT PRODUCT! Yes. This is a great and informative library set. The children as well as myself enjoyed it thoroughly. I would highly recommend these books to any teacher, but especially science teachers. The books are challenging enough for higher level readers, but there are few enough words that a lower reader will not feel intimidated. Yes, very definitely - not only for the library for use in the science classroom as its own set for use by students. Sure, student will need to have both reading and some research to use this product. But the graphics were good too. If funds were available, I would highly recommend this product to a teacher at the appropriate grade/age level. The information was of the highest quality, and the students were genuinely interested in the material.
